Facebook advertised team to be formed as part of the Professional Developmental League for the 2011 season. Paul Brown was named as the coach of the Mountaineers while still coaching the Oregon Football League High Desert Lightning. Speculation is the PDFL was attempting to recruit and rebrand the Lightning, but the troubled PDFL was reduced to a 2-team league when Bend and Salt Lake did not join and the Bellingham Blitz opted to play in the Western Washington Alliance. The Lightning played the 2011 season in the newly formed Pacific Football League but lost all 10-games and shut down prior to the 2012 season.
