Bob Dethman turned down a Detriot Lions contract and chose to play for Portland instead.

Coach Wolfe employed a "double cross" system that got the linemen involved in scoring.  Of the 184 points Portland scored, 111 came from linemen and all but one member of the team had scored...that being center Quentin Greenough of Oregon State's 1942 Rose Bowl team.  Guard Leonard Younce, a former New York Giant led with 27 points from 2 TDs, a field goal and 12 conversions.

Portland came on strong at the end of the season destroying Spokane 68-6.  Younce accounting for 11 points with a TD and 5 conversions.  9 other Boilermakers scored TD's on the day.

Portland could not overcome the Shipbuilers who previously played as the legendary West Seattle Yellowjackets, losing both games in tight battles 7-3 and 3-0 while crushing Vancouver and Spokane.
