The Drakes, namesake of the Drake Hotel which sponsored the team was created with former "Goblins" and "Whitney's" who were now too old to play in the Junior Division to continue their football playing days.

When Oak Bay acquired more island competition they remained part of the BC Intermediate League while forming the Victoria Intermediate League.  The Drakes became kings winning five consecutive championships from 1954 through 1958.  Under Intermediate rules, the 1954 championship would be decided by a total points scored in a two-game series.  The Drakes could not get beyond the Vancouver Cubs for the BC crown, the Cubs were created as a farm team for the newly minted professional B.C. Lions franchise in the Canadian Football League.  The Drakes would go on to dominate the island and stepped up to take on the semi-pro Seattle Ramblers on numerous occassions to a decent showing under Canadian and American rules.

Following the 1958 season, the Drakes absorbed the Mayo Vampires team and changed their names to the Victoria Drakes as the primary civilian team from the island in the BC Intermediate League.  Star halfback of the Vampires, Charlie Bishop would continue to play at an all-star level for the Drakes gaining a place on the post-season team in 1959.

Player-Coach Jack Patrick took over as quarterback in 1956 after playing and coaching with the Vancouver Blue Bombers.  As QB of the Drakes, he led the team to BC and Western Canada Championships in 1956 and 1957 before the team joined the Pacific Northwest Conference semi pro league as champions for 1958 and 1959.  Patrick would go on to play one season in 1966 with the Victoria Steelers.
