Following the shut down of the Eugene Dragons after two win-less sesaons in 2006 and 2007, former Dragon assistant coach Eric Murray attempted to form the Gryphons for play in the North American Football League.  Meeting heavy resistance from the Nineman League, Cottage Grove appeared on some regional team schedules as an independent team but a lack of players forced the Gryphons to drop their efforts.
