One of the most unique "mascots" in Northwest football history, the Vampires were created in 1954 allowing former Junior League players who were too old to continue with the Victoria Vampires to continue playing into their 20s and 30s.  The Mayo team provided the chief rivalry to the Oak Bay Drakes, playing for the Victoria Island Intermediate Championship in a two-game series to end October, losing the total points series 5-33.  As the Drakes began to dominate the league, the Victoria Navy became the Vampires primary rival for second place.

Following the 1958 season it was announced in December that Mayo and the Drakes would combine to form one team as Mayo struggled to consistently compete with Navy and Oak Bay, and the Surrey Rams and Vancouver Wildcats were putting higher caliber teams on the field as well in the British Columbia Intermediate Division.  Halfback Charlie Bishop would go on to be an all-star selection in 1959 with the combined Victoria Drakes team.  Bishop had been a Vampire since 1954 and an all-star in 1956 as one of three players being on all seven voting ballots as the top halfback in the league, even though the Vampires finished in last place.
